Reye's Syndrome
 
Symptoms
Recent viral illness, such as cold, flu, or chickenpox, and:
 
Stage One
  • Persistent or continuous vomiting
  • Signs of brain dysfunction
  • Listlessness
  • Loss of pep and energy
  • Drowsiness
Stage Two
  • Personality Changes
  • Irritability
  • Aggressive or irrational behavior
  • Disorientation or confusion
  • Delirium or convulsions

Characteristics
  • Time to illness is one to seven days following a viral infection
  • Unknown cause
  • No prevention
  • Most common in children
  • Requires immediate attention at onset of symptoms

School Action and Communicability Comments
  • If one or more symptoms appear, call a physician immediately.
  • Go to the emergency room.
  • Do not give your child aspirin or aspirin substitutes.
  • Exclude your child from school until clinically well.
