Reye's Syndrome

Symptoms
Recent viral illness, such as cold, flu, or chickenpox, and:

Stage One

Persistent or continuous vomiting
Signs of brain dysfunction
Listlessness
Loss of pep and energy
Drowsiness

Stage Two

Personality Changes
Irritability
Aggressive or irrational behavior
Disorientation or confusion
Delirium or convulsions

Characteristics

Time to illness is one to seven days following a viral infection
Unknown cause
No prevention
Most common in children
Requires immediate attention at onset of symptoms

School Action and Communicability Comments

If one or more symptoms appear, call a physician immediately.
Go to the emergency room.
Do not give your child aspirin or aspirin substitutes.
Exclude your child from school until clinically well.
