Symptoms

  • Watery eyes
  • Sneezing
  • Runny nose
  • General feeling of illness

Characteristics
  • Time from exposure to illness is 12 hours to three days
  • Spread directly through droplets from coughing, sneezing, or speaking
  • Spread indirectly through articles soiled by discharges of infected person

School Action and Communicability Comments
  • Your child should remain at home for the first one to two days of the cold, or longer if symptoms are severe.
  • Common colds are communicable for 24 hours before and five days after nasal discharge.
  • Do not give aspirin to a child with a common cold.
